Broward County Initiates Coastal Resilience Effort to Combat Erosion |
Broward County has commenced a comprehensive dune and beach restoration project along Hollywood Beach, aiming to bolster the shoreline against erosion and enhance coastal resilience.
The initiative involves the delivery and strategic placement of sand along the beach, with heavy machinery operating from sunrise to sunset, Monday through Friday. Construction is progressing systematically from north to south, with completion anticipated by late April.
To facilitate the project, the parking lot between Bougainvilla Terrace and Azalea Terrace is serving as a staging area, resulting in reduced parking availability through the end of April. Residents and visitors are urged to adhere to contractor signage to ensure safety during this period.
In January, sand placement occurred from Dania Pier to Meade Street, followed by work extending to Cleveland Street. Notably, no dunes are planned between Cleveland Street and Harrison Street. The next phase will commence near Bougainvilla Terrace, with sand placement extending north from Harrison Street, before resuming southward in March toward the southern end of Hollywood’s coastline.
Temporary beach access closures may occur near Bougainvilla Terrace during sand deliveries, though nearby pathways will remain open. The project timeline is subject to change, with updates provided as work progresses.
This restoration effort is part of a broader strategy to fortify Hollywood Beach against coastal threats, ensuring its preservation for future generations. |
