From Cruise Plans to Hospital Vows: Couple Weds at Memorial Regional Hospital

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — A couple's dream cruise wedding took an unexpected turn when the groom suffered a severe heart attack, leading to an impromptu ceremony at Memorial Regional Hospital.

 

Chris Hamilton and his fiancée, Jenny Lamontagne, journeyed from Maine to Florida, accompanied by nearly 30 loved ones, eager to embark on a celebratory cruise. However, days before departure, Chris experienced intense chest pain, resulting in his admission to Memorial Regional Hospital for emergency heart surgery.

 

Despite the cruise setting sail without them, the couple's commitment remained steadfast. With the compassionate support of the hospital's cardiac team, they exchanged vows in the cardiac intensive care unit, transforming a medical crisis into a memorable wedding.

 

The hospital staff went above and beyond, arranging music, flowers, an officiant, and even a wedding cake to ensure the ceremony's success. Debbe Hopkins, a dedicated social worker at Memorial Regional Hospital, played a pivotal role in assisting the couple with the necessary arrangements to formalize their union.

 

Reflecting on the experience, Jenny expressed profound gratitude, stating, "If we were anywhere else, we wouldn’t be where we are right now."

 

Dr. Michael Cortelli, Chief of the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute, who performed Chris's bypass surgery, emphasized the team's commitment to patient care. "It’s what we do every day, and we have an incredible team. We are caregivers, and we felt that he missed an important day in his life, and the team wanted to make it happen," he remarked.

 

Chris is recovering well and is anticipated to return home to Maine in the coming days. This heartwarming event marks the third wedding celebrated at Memorial Healthcare System within the past year, showcasing the staff's unwavering dedication to their patients and their families.
