Broward Residents Brace for Unprecedented Arctic Chill |
Community Prepares as Temperatures Plummet to Near-Freezing Levels |
South Florida is on high alert as an arctic air mass is set to descend upon the region, bringing temperatures that could dip into the 30s—a rarity for the area.
In Hollywood, local businesses are adapting to the impending cold snap. At Three Scoops Ice Cream, owner Ben Morad is shifting his offerings to meet the community's needs. "Lately, it's been OK, but we are expecting to get very cold, very soon," Morad noted. To accommodate, he's introducing hot beverages like coffee and hot chocolate to his menu.
Residents are also taking measures to stay warm. On the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, Tamas Poos expressed his concerns: "We are certainly very scared because I'm not for the cold. I like the sunshine and warm weather, so I'm going to be really, really dressed up, that's for sure."
In response to the forecasted temperatures, Broward County has extended its Cold Weather Emergency through Monday night. The county is collaborating with local community partners to provide emergency shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness from Monday night, January 26, through Thursday night, January 29. Those in need are encouraged to seek refuge at The Salvation Army in Fort Lauderdale, located at 1445 W. Broward Blvd. Shelter beds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited.
As the community braces for this unusual cold spell, officials urge residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe and warm. |
