Broward County Initiates Sand Bypass Project to Combat Beach Erosion

New initiative aims to restore shorelines in Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, and Hollywood

Broward County has embarked on a significant sand bypass project designed to address the persistent issue of beach erosion affecting the shorelines of Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, and Hollywood.

This initiative involves the creation of a substantial sand trap on the north side of the Port Everglades Entrance Channel.

By capturing and relocating sand every two to four years, the project aims to replenish the beaches south of the inlet, effectively restoring the natural flow of sand that has been disrupted for decades.

Jennifer Jurado, the county's director of environmental planning and community resilience, explained, "We have a dredge that's working offshore, and it will be extracting rock and sand materials from the bottom as we work to construct the sand trap."

County officials, including Mayor Beam Furr and Administrator Monica Cepero, have hailed the commencement of this project as a historic milestone.

After 30 years of meticulous planning, design, and permitting, the project is now underway, with completion anticipated by 2027.

Funding for this endeavor is sourced from tourist development taxes, underscoring the community's commitment to preserving its valuable coastal assets.

Residents and visitors can look forward to revitalized beaches that not only enhance recreational opportunities but also bolster the region's resilience against future erosion.

For more information on the project's progress and its impact on local beaches, community members are encouraged to stay informed through official county communications.
